Cranbrook, BC (May 12, 2025) – A pair of capital works projects in Cranbrook are set to begin before the end of May – phase 2 of the 6th Street South Reconstruction project and fire protection work for 18th Street South.
On Monday night, Administration provided an overall 2025 Capital Works update to Council at their regular meeting highlighting all of the major projects slated for the year.
Phase 2 of the 6th Street South Reconstruction is a continuation of the project completed in 2024, which will see new watermain, water services, storm sewer, curb and sidewalk installed between 5th Avenue South and 7th Avenue South. Gally Equipment Services Ltd. is the project contractor and is expected to get started the last week of May 2025.
Gally Equipment Services Ltd is also contractor for the 18th Street South Fire Protection project, which will install the fire hydrant agreed to be completed following the recent defeat of the 12th Avenue South local area service. The installation of this hydrant will ensure proper fire protection for the homes on 18th Street South and 19th Street South. Work is slated to start right after the Victoria Day weekend, around May 19, 2025.
A pair of projects involving the City’s sanitary sewer trunk and the lagoons are also scheduled to be done this year. The Victoria Avenue Sanitary Sewer Trunk Phase 1 project will see the replacement and upsizing of this trunk main on Victoria Avenue from 6th Street North to 2nd Street North, addressing the sanitary capacity issues in the area. The full repaving of Victoria Avenue will also be happening in the area where this sanitary sewer replacement construction will occur. The City is actively seeking a contractor for this project.
The desludging of lagoon cells 2 and 3 is also on tap this construction season, along with the installation of new air aeration diffusers, baffle curtains and lateral lines to improve effluent quality and the overall treatment process at the lagoons. The City is also actively seeking a contractor for this project.
And the McPhee Road Active Transportation and Paving project, which is partly funded by a $500,000 Grant from the Province through the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program announced in late March 2025, will include raised and separated multi-use path on McPhee Road from Theater Road to Industrial Road F. This section of road will also be completely replaced during this construction work. This project is still in the detailed design phase with the City beginning to seek a project contractor toward the end of May 2025.
