Cranbrook, BC (December 14, 2023) -- Structural repair work on the Memorial Arena is moving forward on schedule, within budget and is expected to be complete in early spring 2024.
That was an update from Administration to Council at their December 13, 2023 budget meeting on Wednesday night.
A few changes to the overall scope of the repair project include more structural scaffolding to hold the beams during construction, requirements to move some hydro ducts and additional safety monitoring of the steel structure. The current budget including a 25% contingency is $2,656,000.
Even with some favourable results coming back of some core sampling of the existing beams, there is still some potential of needing to replace some beams found to have rot.
The date to officially start up the ice plant is still being determined, but staff and the contractor are determined to have the ice surface in at the Kinsmen Arena as soon as possible.
Proposed Project Schedule (subject to change):
• December 5th – IFC structural drawings – Complete
• December 8th – IFC scaffold drawings
• December 15th – completed steel shop drawings
• December 22nd – scaffold completion
• January 2nd – excavation and foundation works start
• January 15th – steel installation start
• February 5th – scaffold removal start
• February 29th – completion
Once completed, the repairs are expected to add fifty years to the life expectancy of the exterior structure of the Memorial Arena.
