Cranbrook, BC (September 17, 2024) – As we head into the fall, and residents start to focus toward fall clean up activities, the City of Cranbrook reminds residents to make sure only accepted items are placed in curbside recycling carts and that all household hazardous products are disposed of properly.

Batteries, electronics, cell phones, empty fuel canisters, bear spray canisters, paint and cleaning products must not be placed in your curbside recycling and should always be properly recycled or disposed of. 

“When these kinds of items are improperly discarded or thrown in the curbside recycling bins, this creates a very unsafe situation for both the public and for those working with this recycling material,” says Katelyn Pocha, Project Manager. “There are safe recycling options for most of these products.” 

The Cranbrook Transfer Station, operated by the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) at 2405 22nd Street North (behind Lordco Auto Parts) has a regional household hazardous waste depot and also accepts paint, auto and household batteries, used motor oil, antifreeze, and more. The Cranbrook Bottle Depot, located at 1125 Industrial Road 3, also takes used paint, some small appliances and end-of-life electronics.  To learn more about what can be recycled and where, visit https://engage.rdek.bc.ca.
