Cranbrook, BC (July 29, 2024) – In a remedial action order approved by Cranbrook City Council Monday night, owners of the former Knight’s Hall property have 30 days to safely remove the building debris and fill the unsafe basement space.
With the debris piles in place and the remainder of the property at 22 Briar Avenue NW not properly secured, there is a risk to both the health and the safety of nearby residents and property owners, including those at Pinewood Elementary School which is near the property.
On December 19, 2023, a fire destroyed the three-story Knights Hall building on the property. On December 22, 2023, City council adopted a remedial action resolution requiring the demolition of the partially standing remains of the fire damaged building to accommodate a safe investigation by our local fire department.
Between December 29 and December 31, 2023, contractors carried out the demolition and collected the building remains in large piles on the property, where they remain.
If the resolution of Council is not followed and the owner does not comply with the resolution, the City may carry out the work under s. 17 of the Community Charter and recover the costs of doing so as property taxes.
