Cranbrook, BC (September 3, 2026) - As fall gets closer, the City reminds residents with pools and hot tubs to ensure they are drained safely.

Pool and hot tub water should not go into the sanitary sewer. It should also not go into a storm sewer unless it has been properly treated first. Storm sewers in Cranbrook drain into local streams. Water with chlorine, bromine, salt, or other chemicals can harm fish and other aquatic life.

The best and safest option is to treat the water first, then drain it slowly onto your property so it can soak into the ground. Please make sure it does not flood nearby properties, streets, lanes, or alleys.

Before draining, remove as much chlorine or other treatment chemicals as possible and test the water if you can. If you are not sure what to do, check with your pool or hot tub manufacturer.

Saltwater pools are different. Water from saltwater pools cannot go into the storm sewer and must be hauled away by a licensed hauler.
