Cranbrook, BC (March 15, 2024) – Recent code changes from the Province to BC Codes 2024 are now in effect, which impact local building and plumbing code regulations and permit submissions.
The City is sharing this information with our local builders, contractors, and tradespeople to help provide a high-level understanding of the changes and how they will impact the City’s approval process for new building permits. As well, the City is looking to aid the industry’s transition and adaptation to the Province’s new BC Codes 2024.
Significant code changes to new residential buildings in BC Codes 2024 include but are not limited to the following:
- Stairs, Guardrails & Handrails (9.4.8)
- Accessibility Design Requirements (9.5.3.2)
- Firestopping (9.10.9)
- Spatial Separation (9.10.14, 9.10.15)
- Radon (9.13)
- Footings and Foundations (9.15)
- Heat Transfer, Air Leakage, & Condensation Control (9.25)
- Interior Cladding & Ceiling Finishes (9.29.5)
- Cooling Requirements/Overheating (9.33.2, 9.33.3)
- Energy Step Code (9.36, 9.37)
- Accessibility (3.8 & 9.5.2)
- Part 4 – General Structural Design
- Plumbing Code
“Any new building permit applications received by the City must comply with the new BC Codes 2024,” says Tony Luce, Building Inspector/Planning Supervisor with the City of Cranbrook. “Any previous applications submitted to the City prior to March 8, 2024 may still comply with the 2018 BC Building Code, although any incomplete applications will not be considered.”
The Province enacts code changes every 6 years, with the most recent update to the BC Building Code and BC Plumbing Code in 2018.
