Cranbrook, BC (April 13, 2026) – A recent youth survey shows that young people in Cranbrook are eager for more welcoming spaces, clearer information about available programs, and increased opportunities to help shape activities designed for them.
The survey, conducted in March 2026 and completed by College of the Rockies nursing students Andreas Kamp, Nadine Bondt, and Olivia Shuflita, focused on youth ages 13–17 and explored their experiences with local recreation and community spaces. Findings show that while many youth feel welcome at Western Financial Place, there is strong interest in safe places to gather, programs that reflect youth interests, and greater involvement in planning and decision making. Music and arts, sports and recreation, and leadership and volunteer opportunities were identified as top areas of interest.
Based on these results, the project team developed and presented recommendations to Council on Monday night, which include involving youth directly in program design, exploring ways to make Western Financial Place more inviting to youth, and incorporating youth created art into community spaces such as the skatepark. Together, these ideas aim to build a stronger sense of belonging and encourage positive youth engagement across the community. You can review the project team’s presentation here.
This youth survey project was completed through the CityStudio partnership between the City of Cranbrook and the College of the Rockies first announced in March 2025. CityStudio connects students with real community projects, giving them hands on learning opportunities while helping the City explore local priorities and gather useful community insights.
Through this partnership, students worked alongside City staff and community partners to design, deliver, and evaluate projects that support local needs while building strong connections between the City of Cranbrook, the College of the Rockies, and the community.
