Cranbrook, BC (June 26, 2024) – There’s positive action moving forward to address issues around accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues reported by residents around the community thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia (SPARC BC).

The City’s Accessibility Action Committee is working closely with Public Works management to redesign curbsides in key areas of the City with proper letdowns for those with mobility devices like scooters or wheelchairs, and for families with strollers, to be able to move around the community easily, safely and effectively. With operational priorities already in motion for 2024, this project is anticipated to be undertaken in 2025 during the construction season.

This is just one of several updates the Accessibility Action Committee provided to Council at their regular meeting of Monday, June 24, 2024. 

The Committee also highlighted several other achievements and progress by the Committee, and action items around accessibility on the list for future consideration. The Committee is exploring the possibility of introducing user-friendly rental wheelchairs, while reviewing options of replacing the mechanized stair lift from the main floor to Council Chambers at City Hall to allow better access to all to Council meetings.
