Cranbrook, BC (May 4, 2026) – Over the past few years, the term “Asset Management” has been used in many discussions within the community, but for the City of Cranbrook, it is the cornerstone of how we do business. To some, it may just sound like a new fad buzzword, but the underlying importance of proper asset management goes far beyond that. Asset Management guides how the City operates and manages the physical and natural assets we own. It is deliberate and proactive – not reactionary – and constantly striving to get the most out of the taxpayer dollars. But the basic understanding of what ‘Asset Management’ is still may seem mysterious.
This series is designed to bring Asset Management out of the shadows and help you understand how it is a vital guide in what we do each and every day, working for you in the City of Cranbrook.
So, what exactly is Asset Management?
At its core, Asset Management is the process of developing, operating, and maintaining our assets so they deliver the best possible value and performance. It’s about balancing costs, risks, and opportunities throughout an asset’s entire life cycle.
So, what is an asset?
That is a great question. In our community, assets include things like roads; water, sewer, and storm sewer infrastructure; our reservoir; our spray irrigation site and sewage lagoons. They also include all City buildings and facilities, as well as our parks, trails, trees, watersheds, playgrounds, equipment, and vehicle fleet.
Why does it matter?
To understand why Asset Management matters, it helps to look at the City’s Asset Management Strategy, what it is, where it came from, and how it guides our work today.
The strategy provides a clear, organization wide approach to managing the City’s infrastructure and assets in a transparent and financially sustainable way. It brings together more than 15 years of planning, inventories, and best practices into one shared framework, helping all departments make consistent, informed decisions. At its core, the strategy is about making sure City assets are maintained and replaced at the right time, while balancing costs, risks, and community expectations over the long term.
The strategy sets standards and practices for managing our assets from start to finish from planning and design to day to day maintenance, renewal, and eventual replacement. It defines roles and responsibilities and helps align staff, Council, and external partners around the same goals. Just as importantly, it supports focus toward proactive work, using regular asset condition assessments to catch issues early and to plan ahead.
Looking forward, the strategy plays an important role in future planning. It provides reliable data to support Council decisions, strategic planning, and master plans. By using asset condition, risk, service levels, and life cycle costs, the City can better prioritize maintenance and capital investments. This leads to clearer understanding of infrastructure risks, more predictable funding needs, and smarter decisions that support sustainable service delivery for today—and for future generations.

Overall, asset management is about acting early and planning ahead, so we can prevent small issues from becoming bigger and more costly problems in the future. It ensures that decisions we make around our asset replacements and preventative maintain schedules are based on data, risk, condition, and value to the community. It standardizes our asset information, gives logical direction, and enables data-driven decision-making about our assets. Proactive maintenance saves tax dollars over time, and using our Asset Management Strategy helps ensure that we invest at the right time to prevent more expensive failures later on.
The City’s work in Asset Management has been – and continues to be – recognized across British Columbia (BC). In November 2023, the City of Cranbrook was given the #OurAssetsMatter Sustainable Service Delivery Champion award from Asset Management BC. This award recognizes an organization that demonstrates leadership, passion, and excellence in meeting the vision and mission of Asset Management BC, both within their own operations and across the broader asset management community in BC.
Looking ahead, we will continue to highlight how Asset Management shapes and directs the work we do. You’ll learn about how it influences our decisions around our roads; our water, sewer, and storm sewer infrastructure; City buildings and facilities; our fleet and equipment; and our spray irrigation site and lagoons. We’ll also share some great successes we’ve had and how these efforts have helped us develop better processes and work more efficiently for you.
