Cranbrook, BC (December 12, 2023) – The Shadow Mountain Sanitary Sewer Servicing and the phase 2 reconstruction of 4th Street North highlight a busy year of capital works projects in Cranbrook in 2023. Administration provided Council with an update on the capital works projects at their regular meeting on Monday night.
The force main pipe has been installed on the Shadow Mountain Sanitary Sewer servicing project, with all disturbed areas cleaned up and hydro-seeded. The lift station pumps and tanks have been installed with fencing of the lift station sites to start in the coming week. The lift stations are scheduled to be in full operation before Christmas, with the final handover of the lift station operation happening early in the New Year.
The electrical contractor is working to wrap up all necessary electrical servicing on the Shadow Mountain project; however, due to ongoing supply chain issues, many items are still trickling in. The odour control building is nearly complete waiting on a door, which is on backorder.
Phase 2 of the 4th Street North reconstruction project and the 2024 paving program are also finished. The second phase of 4th Street North continued the work started in 2022, with water, sewer and storm sewer infrastructure upgrades and sidewalk and roadway updates. The upgrades bring the infrastructure along this corridor up to date with a renewed lifecycle, allowing for future development.
The 2023 paving program saw the resurfacing of 2nd Street South from 14th Avenue South to Victoria Avenue, 16th Avenue South from 2nd Street South to 3rd Street South, and 1st Street South from 12th Avenue South to 14th Avenue South. All these locations saw new asphalt places and the replacement of sidewalks in many areas. There were also pedestrian improvements made around Laurie Middle School on 2nd Street South, which has been well received by the school.
The Lagoons Phase 2 Pipeline Construction project is set to gear up over the next week, with some earth moving happening before Christmas, with the pipe crew to start on site early in the New Year.
For this project, the City used a new Request For Proposal (RFP) process to secure the contractor, which was reportedly well received by the contractors that submitted bids. Three RFPs were submitted by Copcan Civil LP, Mackay Contracting and Castle Oilfield Construction, with Copcan Civil LP being awarded the contract.
The City of Cranbrook gratefully acknowledges the financial contributions of the Canada Community Building Fund (former Gas Tax Fund) toward many of these important infrastructure projects.
