Cranbrook, BC (January 10, 2024) – With low temperatures forecast for the City of Cranbrook and region, an Extreme Weather Response shelter will be open at Christ Church Anglican, located at 46 13th Avenue South beginning on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 7:00pm.

The City of Cranbrook would like to thank Christ Church Anglican for offering space within their church for this much-needed shelter and ANKORS East for stepping up to operate the shelter. 

The Alliance Church will be open on weekends from 8:30am to 7:00pm for people needing a warm space. ANKORS will also be open Monday to Friday from 8:00am until 7pm to provide a warm space until the overnight shelter opens.

Extreme weather shelters save lives and help to ensure that businesses, emergency responders, and citizens are not left scrambling to try and manage the problems associated with people trying to survive in the cold. 

BC Housing, through the Travelodge shelter location has been starting to double up people in rooms, where possible to allow for additional people to stay and get out of the cold, increasing to 16 rooms effective December 1, 2023.

A weather alert activates these shelters, providing overnight, life-saving spaces and resources for unhoused people. During the day, the shelter is closed, and anyone must find other designated warming spaces until the shelter opens again.

The City will provide support to those who need it through this cold weather event by offering space in both the Cranbrook Public Library and Western Financial Place as warming centres for those who need it during the day.  The library is open until 8pm Monday through Thursday and until 5pm Friday through Sunday. Western Financial Place is open daily until 8pm.
