Cranbrook, BC (October 8, 2024) – Odour in the City of Cranbrook’s water system in the fall months is a normal and regular occurrence and is not a health concern to our water customers.
Because the City is mostly served by surface water stored in the Phillips Reservoir, when air temperatures start to cool in the fall, it cools the surface of the reservoir. The cooler, denser water sinks and causes warmer water lower in the reservoir to turn over to the top often bringing organic material with it. This is why we are experiencing the slight odour around the community.
“We sample our water throughout the system on a weekly basis, and the water being delivered to your homes and businesses is safe to use,” says Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works. “This is an annual occurrence for us, and really only lasts a few weeks.”
