Cranbrook, BC (January 19, 2024) – Environment Canada has forecast the return of temperatures above -15 for the City of Cranbrook and surrounding area. The Extreme Weather Alert which triggered the opening of the overnight shelter at Christ Church Anglican, has been rescinded effective today (January 19, 2024).
Extreme weather shelters save lives and help to ensure that businesses, emergency responders, and citizens are not left scrambling to try and manage the challenges associated with people trying to survive in the cold.
The community collaboration and teamwork that took place over the past 10 days was truly amazing and provided food and warmth to many citizens without appropriate housing and heat.
The City of Cranbrook would like to thank Christ Church Anglican for their welcoming hospitality in offering space within their church for this much-needed overnight shelter, ANKORS East management and staff for the caring and professional job in running the shelter and incredible outreach efforts, and to the Alliance Church for opening their doors as a weekend warming center.
The City would also like to thank all the community partners, faith-based organizations, and all those community members who donated time, food, clothing, blankets/pillows and more, to save lives and provide comfort. You have truly shown that Cranbrook is a community who cares.
