Cranbrook, BC (June 10, 2020) – In order for the City of Cranbrook to continue to keep its solid waste collection operations moving smoothly during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the cooperation of our residents remains paramount.
While recognizing and sympathizing with the extra cleaning and sanitizing work happening in many households, all household garbage must be contained within garbage bags before being put in the containers for pickup. Loose garbage, especially paper towels and wipes, can easily be blown away while the garbage containers are being emptied. During the current public health situation, exposure to these loose materials could also put our employees at greater unnecessary risk.
If a member of your household is sick, please ensure all personal waste including tissues, masks and gloves are double bagged. Please ensure that there is no loose garbage or open garbage bags left out on your collection day, otherwise it will not be picked up. This is an important step to ensure the health and safety of our collection team.
It is also important that all garbage containers have a watertight cover and smooth rim. Containers must be in good structural and sanitary condition and have fixed handles. Weight is not to exceed 20 kg per container and either the garbage containers or bags can be no larger than 100L. You are allowed a maximum of three containers or bags for pickup per week.
Residents are also reminded that wipes and paper towels cannot be flushed down toilets. These items are not designed to be disposed of in this way, and they can cause major blockages in domestic and City owned sewer lines.
We appreciate the community’s continued patience and understanding during this difficult time as we work together to ensure the well-being of everyone in our community and help slow the spread of COVID-19.
