I’m Wendy Turner and I am running for a second term as SD5 Board Trustee. We had a District Health and Safety Committee during Covid that included representatives from each of our stakeholder groups and with many great minds working together were able to identify the challenges and possible remedies for implementing the government regulations that allowed our children to continue with their educational programs. Transparency and inclusion are important qualities that help us achieve our best outcomes.
As a retired teacher, I continue to view decisions through a lens of “ what will this mean for children in the classroom”. My role has expanded to learning about the systems that are in place, and how to advocate for a well funded public education system for our kids. Each year our stakeholder groups are included in our budgetary process. With their presentations we then have fulsome discussions, everyone has their say, and the decisions made are backed by the entire Board.
We have been successful in purchasing two electric school busses and continuously look for options that will narrow our carbon footprint. There is still much advocacy needed for our two major capitol projects going forward; the replacement of Mount Baker Senior Secondary in Cranbrook, and building of a new school in Fernie. I ask for your support to be part of the Board that moves those forward. Please take the time to vote on October 15th!
Sincerely,
Wendy Turner
