Dr. Clay Hammett — Candidate for School Trustee, Cranbrook & Area C
I live in Fernie, but much of my working life is elsewhere in the East Kootenay. As a physician working in Cranbrook, Marysville and Fernie, I meet and talk with people from communities across the region every day. As a trustee, I would listen closely to Cranbrook and Area C and bring their priorities to the SD5 Board.
Education has always been part of my life. I am the grandson, son and husband of educators, and my wife and I have raised four children in SD5 schools. I am an educator too- I am an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and for two decades taught medical students in the classroom and in the clinic, and also led a rural family medicine residency program.
I also bring experience in leadership and governance. I have formal training in systems organization and governance through York University’s Schulich School of Business, served on the inaugural board of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, and spent more than a decade representing family physicians in Ontario.
I am running because I know I can make a useful contribution to SD5. My priorities are strong educational outcomes, responsible stewardship, and schools where students and staff feel connected and involved. I want more opportunities for students to participate in sport, arts, recreation, leadership and service; especially those who haven’t yet found their place.
I will listen, do my homework, work with others and make decisions based on what is best for our students and schools.
